Mariah Carey Live In
Concert:
The Charmbracelet 2003 World Tour
Fast Facts :
- The sold-out one-night Manila concert, with a jam-packed 30,000+ crowd,
was the top grosser among all the cities visited by Mariah.
- Mariah arrived in Manila from Shanghai, China, at 9:05 pm on
Saturday, November 15 onboard by Philippine Airlines Flight PR-337.
- Upon arrival, Mariah was immediately directed to the presidential lounge of the Ninoy
Aquino International Airport (NAIA) that the concert organizers
rented, when eventually airport police could not control screaming fans inside the airport, which included airport employees.
- Mariah's arrival cause a slight but ridiculous national issue as soon as
NAIA's General Manager released negative statements to the media that
Mariah's crew allegedly insulted him as the airport's highest official
even after giving them a VIP treatment. The incident happened after
Mariah's Tour Manager David Miller shooed him out of the presidential
lounge while a group of stylist was doing a retouch on Mariah inside.
- Local media however, upon learning the truth (that the lounge was
actually rented by the local show organizers for their exclusive use),
supported Mariah and criticized the official's disgusting behavior.
- Few minutes after, Mariah was greeted by screaming fans and media people as she
went out and walked towards a black limousine waiting outside the building. Before getting inside the car,
Mariah stood for a few seconds as she waved and threw a flying-kiss to
her fans.
- Mariah arrived at Makati Shangri-La Hotel escorted by 15 Makati City
cops in motorcycles.
- According to one of the hotel managers, Mariah's entourage occupied 4 floors
(24th-27th) including the Presidential Suite where Mariah slept. The
Presidential Suite, supposedly worth $2,500 a night.
- A few hours upon arrival at the Makati Shangri-La, Mariah went down
from her room and dined at a French restaurant located at the 2nd
floor of the hotel. Afterwards, Mariah faced the fans waiting outside
the restaurant and signed autographs for them. Fans however weren't allowed by Mariah's security to have a one-on-one picture taking.
- Mariah's staff bought Macadamia and Chocolate flavored ice creams,
early morning Sunday, at a Haagen-Dazs shop located just outside the
hotel, according to the store manager.
- A few hours before the concert, Mariah chatted with Ryan Ignacio,
19, a fan who wrote to GMA Network public service program "Wish
Ko Lang," wishing to meet his idol. According to the show
executive producer, Mariah was really touched to see Ryan that she
hugged him eventually.
- The concert venue was already jam-packed as early as 3pm. The show
started at 9:45pm.
- There were 7 costume changes as she performed 16 songs.
- During the band introduction, when she's about to introduce
keyboardist Eric Daniels, Mariah reacted on a cockroach she saw
running towards the dark spot of the stage near where Eric was
positioned by saying "There's some sort of bug onstage and it's scaring the hell out of
me." That moment cause genuine laughter on everybody as professional Mariah Carey
continued singing.
- Just a few minutes after the show started, a makeshift fence in
general admission collapsed due to uncontainable reaction of fans, but
no one was seriously injured based on reports.
- About 80 bouncers, 200 ushers and 350 Philippine National Police
officers were dispatched all over The Fort to insure security throughout the show.
Mariah's back-up vocalist Takeytha 'Teka' Johnson said, "I've
never seen this much armed men in my life!"
- The show ended at around 11:15 pm.
- Back in the hotel, security was extra strict since the whole hotel
lobby was filled with fans who got hold of where she was staying.
- According to some staff, Mariah took a bath after the concert and
redone her makeup. She also did some business calls back to US.
- After an hour, at around 1:30 am, Globe (one of the sponsors) VIPs and contest winners were ushered upstairs to the presidential suite where the Meet-and-Greet took place.
- At around 2:30 am, Mariah went downstairs for the after-show party,
organized by Tim Yap, which was held at Shangri-La's newest spot called, Red Bar (the former
Cheval Blanc).
- Mariah's 35-men entourage left for New York 1:00 pm Monday November 17
boarding China Airlines while Mariah cancelled her Singapore Airline flight and instead took a surprise detour to Amanpulo Resort in Palawan, southeastern part of the Philippines accompanied only by her manager and two bodyguards. Amanpulo is on the private island of Pamalican, 200 km east of Palawan.
- David Miller who shooed NAIA's GM on Nov. 15
incident was already sent back home together with the dancers, etc.
without VIP treatment.
- Mariah stayed in Amanpulo, an exclusive resort accessible only
by private chartered planes, until Saturday morning. The resort
supposedly charges $600 to $1,000 per night.
- Mariah arrived back at the NAIA at around 12 noon and was allowed to stay
at the dignitaries’ lounge as VIP while she waited for the Cathay
Pacific Airlines flight that was to take her to Hong Kong and then to
the US.
- There were reports before that Mariah and her company will pass
through another international airport when she returns to the United
States due to an earlier promised by NAIA's GM not to give them VIP
treatment after an unpleasant incident involving him and Mariah's
tour manager last Nov. 15.
- At the lounge, Mariah was seen eating a takeout meal from Kentucky
Fried Chicken. At around 1:00 pm, Mariah, wearing a tight white dress
with touches of red, proceeded to the airport’s Gate 15 to board her
flight.
